Report: What a great game. Holcs came at us like Whirling Dervishes as we emerged from some committed Rugby watching whilst they warmed up. We soon understood why they are league leaders as they scored 2 and could have scored 4 in the first quarter. (Well done Jamie!)
We gradually picked up the (rapid) pace and man marked their skilled attackers closer but we were still being picked off by quick interpasses in midfield followed by an excellent range of passing. Our only outlets were
occasional dribbles by our 13 year olds and the dogged old fashioned centre forward play by Spencer whose enthusiasm, commitment and encouragement shone out. We finally got into their half, won a short and despite some poor passing by Rambo senior and minor the ball fell to the animal who scored.
A quite amazing series of 4 shorts after the half time whistle could have produced 2 P flicks as their No 1 twice ran into the animal (clearly his reputation does not spread far and wide) and eventually produced a debut goal from Richards who spent more time horizontal flailing at balls than Cynthia Paine. His celebratory shouting was enough to wake the dead. As is clear we went into half time with our tails up.
The second half saw an amazing turnaround. We got control of midfield and started to dominate possession. Some huge hits into the D needed only a slight defection to produce a goal and finally Steve Pateman got a slight touch to an Oggy cross inches from the line which the umpire awarded and Holcs to their credit accepted. Spencer then Geoff Hurst style removed any doubts about the third goal by sealing a 4-2 win with another poachers goal into the corner off the bottom of his stick whilst falling through a crowd of players.
It is fair to say we enjoyed this game hugely but that on another day if our heads had dropped we would have lost 7-0.
