Report:
We went into this game expecting to win by a large margin, with the knowledge that a 9-0 win combined with other favourable results would have taken us into third position in the league (!). In some ways, it was a typical 2s performance: great team spirit, James scoring from a short corner, Jon not scoring, Matt getting carded....
In the first half we went down to an early goal against the run of play, but by half time were 3-1 up. Holcombe looked much stronger than their bottom of the table position with no points dictated, and there were some familiar faces from our game against them two weeks ago. A look at the fixture listing in the clubhouse afterwards showed that their 4s didn't have a game!
The score went to 3-2, then Kieron scored a good individual goal to make it 4-2 and we thought we had it wrapped up. Then the lights went off!! Their caretaker apparently clicked the wrong switch! Mmmm. We then had a 10 minute break to let the lights warm back up, during which time resulted in yours truly injuring himself practising flicks. With Lake warming up on the sideline with a couple of pints and a fag, our prospects on the restart didn't look great. The Holcombe pressure mounted and they earned plenty of short corners and eventually drew level. They could have even won it with another short corner on the final whistle, but that would not have been a fair reflection on the game.
